They take the lines from Europe to the St. Lawrence and come down. It has become so bad. it has become such an abuse. that within a very few days Canada has passed some very stringent regulations in regard to that class of immigrants. which. I think. will be of great service to us. That shows how much that practice has extended. It is advertised abroad. as we are informed by the commissioners of immigration. that persons can get into the United States over the border without an examination. They are publicly notified. It is turning the stream of objectionable immigrantsI am speaking of those objectionable under existing law and not under any change proposed hereover the border instead of through the ports. where the inspection is pretty thorough.
