Ruthenians. 53 per cent. Italians from southern Italy. 59 per cent. and Portuguese. 63 per cent. In other words. the illiteracy shown by the immigrants coming from northern Europe for the year was only 5.6 per centa little over five men out of every hundred men who landed from northern Europe were unable to read or writebut when you come to the immigration from southern and eastern Europe we find that there was an average of 43.2. In other words. that of the lower class of immigrants that are now coming into this country by the hordes. the greater proportion are immigrants coming from eastern and southern Europe. 43 per cent of whom can not read and write. and if you add to them the other races that are coming in. which are the Japanese and Chinese and Assyrians. you make it 50 per cent of these races that come into this country who can not read and write as against 5.6 per cent from northwest and western Europe. Those who come here are entitled to all the benefits of our laws. all the benefits of our country. Are we doing the southern Italians.
