Session #57 · 1901–03

Speech #570064628

I am :not going into a tariff argument. that has nothing to do with this bill. I merely mean this: I read in the papers not long ago where a certain number of immigrants landed in this country without money. without property. with nobody to give them employment. and they were driven from the refuse dumps in New York. where they were sleeping and eating the refuse of that great city because they had no place to go. These men. if brought here and allowed to remain here. must come eventually into competition with the great American wageearner of this country. and I say he is entitled to be free from competition from such a source. That is my position.
