They were odious contracts. and there was great feeling against them. In 1866 Mr. Burlingame went to China and created quite a sensation by his advocacy of more friendly relations with that Empire. He came here as a Chinese ambassador in 1868 with a large delegation of Chinese. The Senate repaired to the hall of the House of Representatives. where both Houses assembled to receive the delegation and to do them honor. There were ceremonies and dinners in Washington. in New York. and in San Francisco to do honor to those Chinese magnates. A treaty was negotiated for free immigration of Chinese to this country.
