Session #57 · 1901–03

Speech #570039858

The gentleman seems to be impressed with the idea that there is no analogy between the negro and the Chinaman. and that the statement of my colleague that. like the negro. so long as the Chinaman had a drop of his own racial blood he was one of the race. He said there were Irish. Germans. and French in this country who carried their nationality. but he seems to forget that these are of our race. and so soon as they have become naturalized they are Americans. There is no such thing. in fact. as an IrishAmerican or GermanAmerican. For if a man is an American at all he has no foreign prefix to his nationality.
