Session #57 · 1901–03

Speech #570025126

Watson and Richard Runke. of Wisconsin. and they ask the question. Should our marine be subsidized? In answer to the question they show conclusively that the steamships of all nations in the Asiatic trade. on the deck and in the hold. employ Asiatics. and in this respect the American and his competitors are on a perfect equality. I quote from the editor of the Coast Seamens Journal. which says: Wages are equal on the vessel of all nationalities with shipping crews in any given port. In other words. it is the rule of the port and not the flag of the ship that governs wages.
