Those crops have come into great importance and have attracted the attention of the people of the United States to a large extent. The tobacco crop. as is well known. is a staple of four or five States. but the rice crop and the sugar crop appear to be confined to certain sections of the South. Now. the rice crop has certainly come into great importance in Louisiana and in Texas. and I may say that that has been largely due to the enterprise and skill of some Northern immigrants into that part of the country. who have applied to the culture of rice the same advanced mechanism that is applied in the North tothe culture of wheat. The rice belt in Texas and Louisiana is very extensive. and the crop is growing in importance and value every year. Now. it is necessary.
