Session #56 · 1899–1901

Speech #560021592

A handful of English capitalists control our financial system and a handful of American millionaires are talking about an AngloAmerican alliance. But these flunkies to the British Crown are not the American people and are not even in sympathy with the American people. . I am opposed to increasing the opportunities for the millions of negroes in Puerto Rico and the 10.000.000 Asiatics in the Philippines of becoming American citizens and swarming into this country and coming in competition with our farmers and mechanics and laborers. We are trying to keep out theChinese with one hand. and now you are proposing to make Territories of the United States out of Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands. and thereby open wide the door by which these negroes and Asiatics can pour like the locusts of Egypt into this country. I say keep them all out. We can not even civilize the Chinese within our borders and who have been here for fifty years.
