The production of longstaple cotton in the world is very limited. and the demand for it is correspondingly small. In America it is produced only in the three States of South Carolina. Georgia. and Florida. the largest part of it in Georgia. There is about $5.000.000 worth of it annually imported into this country from Egypt. and that small importation reduces the price of longstaple cotton in the United States 40 per cent or 50 per cent below the price which it would otherwise bring. With such cotton produced in the Philippines with unlimited cheap Asiatic labor. the cultivation of longstaple cotton in the United States must certainly be abandoned. And so. Mr.
