Session #56 · 1899–1901

Speech #560007956

It is required for the apportionment of Representatives. and in that sense. and in that only. it becomes important. but I think the Treasury Department make every month an estimate of population. They make the estimate on the statistics of immigration and upon the wellknown rule of the growth of the people. considering our past history. I have no doubt they come near enough to the actual facts for all practical purposes. The census ought to contain satistics on a great many other subjects. Our census has been the most elaborate and perhaps the most useful of any census ever made by any government. and it is so recognized.
