Boards of trade and chambers of commerce in various localities look forward to and with glowing words portray the riches which they seem to think will drop into our laps. Thus was the siren voice raised in the case of Hawaii. and yet it is demonstrable today. as some of us said it would be demonstrated. that the local sugar growers alone made fortunes from annexation. Then we were told that numerous laborers would go to Hawaii and find a longsought opportunity for the development of their interests. and yet we have ascertained from experience that these anticipations were not realized and that there is no opening for such immigration. Thatacquisition was only valuable to the few and only dangerous. as I thought. in the way of a precedent. However this may be. that is history. and the only excuse for our action is that it was not of a character sufficiently important to make it vital.
