It strikes methat at this time we undoubtedlyhave prosperity in certain vocations. and in certain other vocations we undoubtedly have depression. Calling our friends attention again to the old State of Maine. I want to say that the people in that State at this time are in favor of an immigrationrestriction law. A few days ago I received from some friend or some citizen a clipping from a newspaper published in Maine. the Old Town Enterprise. It states that the wages of lumbermen are at least $2 a thousand less this year than they were last year. They say by reason of the tariff on lumber that the lumber industry has shut down in Canada and thelumbermen from that country have come over into Maine. and that the labor market for lumberers is oversupplied. Now. that is reasonable. I do not doubt but there is some truth in that. and that is used as an argument in favor of a bill restricting immigration. But it seems to me that no reasonable man can deny that if Grover Cleveland. in whose defense I have not a word to say. had been President up to this moment we should have had some of this prosperity. In other words.
