There is only one other amendment. On page 23. after line 24. 1 move to insert what I send to the desk. The amendment was read and agreed to. as follows: Immigrant Station. Ellis Island. New York: That the Secretary of the Treasury be. and lie is hereby. authorized and directed to cause to be erected buildings suitable for an immigrant station oii Ellis Island. Now York Harbor. New York. to consist of not exeeeding three principal structures. all to be so built of stone. brick. and iron or such firelroof materials as the Secretary may select. as to be completely fireproof. ahp.the large pavilion building for the reception and examination of iinmigranlhtmd the building used as a dormitory to have opening from the main floor so many doors swinging outward and to ho so surrounded by spacious outside balconies made of iron. with iron staircases leading therefrom. as to afford speedy exit for immigrants in case of fire. and the Secretary is hereby authorized to enlarge the said Ellis Island. not exceeding 3 acres. bly placing bulkheads and filling in behind the same. the whole cost of the buildings and improvements hereby authorized iot to exceed the sum of $600000. of which sum there is hereby appropriated. for the purpose of procuring plans. drawings. and specifications anc beginning the work hereby authorized. the sum of $150.000. and the Secretary of the Treasury is hereby authorized to contract for the erection of all the buildings or of any one thereof or of any portion of either subject to appropriations to b2 made within the limit of cost above provided.
