Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540126046

But. sir. I stand here to protest against the passage of this legislation in its. general scope. It is not only unjust to the immigrant. but it is injurious to the people of the United States. My friend the gentleman from Minnesota has in his hand a paper in which the cry comes from the vast regions of the Northwest for more immigration to fell the forests and to plow the soil. What we want is not restriction of immigration so much as the regulation of it that shall take these voyagers from foreign shores away from the crowded cities of the Union and place them where they can win prosperity for themselves and add to the glory and progress of the great Republic. And I desire to say to the members of the Republican party here that it was the foreignborn vote in the last election that gave you your great maj6ritie4 in the States of the West and the Commonwealths of the East. In the spirit of nonpartisanship that should characterize this discussion.
