The statement of the House conferees was read. as follows: The House conferees on the disagreeing votes of the two Houses on the amendments to the bill H. R. 7864 respectfully submit to the House the following statement of facts to accompany the report of the conference committee: The report of the conference committee having been submitted to the House and printed in the REcoRD. thus enabling members to compare the 1897. ..... report now presented with the report adopted by the House January 27 last. the statement required by the rule may be brief. The report now presented differs from the report previously adopted in this. that instead of reqiiiring the intending immigrant to read and write the "English language or the language of their native or resident country." the requirement of the present report.is. that they be able to read the " English or some other language." Again. in the same section. in addition to those exempted from the test provided for in the report. the wife of an Intending immigrant (said Immigrant being acceptable under the law )-his wife may accompany her husband even though she is not herself eligible. Also all minor children of an intending qualfed immigrant. it such immgrant he admissible2 may accompany such parent even though illiterate. The same exemption is made in behalf of the wife and mloor children of immigrants already here. The former report admitted only such illiterate children as were under 16 years of age. No ether changes are made in the provisions of the report of January 27 last. except h section of former report Is omitted from the present 11of which is respectfully submitted.
