It soon became a question whether he should enlist in the Confederate army or starve. He had to enlist. and served a little over a year. At the first opportunity he deserted to the Union Army. and served a year and a half on a Union gunboat. Afterwards he became naturalized and made application for a pension under the act of 1890. which was granted. Under the construction put on the lhw by a Republican administration. he received a pension aud drew that for five years. At the time he made the application for pension he also made an affidavit that he had been in the Confederate army. which affidavit is on record.
