Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540118180

I am in favor of more stringent immigration laws. I believe that all criminal. pauper. contractlabor. and ignorant classes and anarchists should be denied admission to our shores. . The people of Kansas do not object to the Germans. Swedes. Irish. and others who have helped develop our great State. We are proud of them. but they all. regardless of their nativity. favor keeping out the objectionable classes. As strongly as I favor the further restriction of immigration. I can not support the conference report. No one of us can tell what would be the effect of the bill agreed upon by the conference committee.
