The delays and reverses of Mc lellan had created doubt and discouragement and in the North recruiting h ractically stopped. A pcle meetig held at Detroit on J y 15. 1862. was dispersed by an armed mob from Canada. where Southern refugee had found asylum. The indignation that resulted from this action found expression in a great gathering. at which the venerable Gen. Lewis Cass presided.
