Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540111178

I have some knowledge of the Western country. I have traversed Kansas when there was scarcely a white man within its borders. Here was an invitation given to the people of the United States. to immigrants from every nation and clime. to come here and occupy those lands. They were invited to make homes on the lands. and they were told that when they had complied with those laws they should have title. Now. was that law enacted or was it ever intended to apply to lands which were surrounded by walls of homes and firesides. as these lands arethe wall in Kansas. people living right down to the border. the wall in Missouri. people living right to the border?
