Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540103171

Mr. President. I quite agree with the Senator from Connecticut that an exception in the pending immigration bill in favor of Cuba would be a discrimination against other people or other nations in a likebr similar condition. I understand from Senators who have spoken on this subject that there is no disposition to limit the hospitality of the United States in cases of emergency. of a character induced by political oppression at home. If the exception incorporated in the bill should be made and there should be either far or near from our shores oppression of any people in any country and those people sought refuge in our borders. they could not obtain it.
