Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540082083

I hope. Gentlemen forget to tell us that great benefits are claimed from the fact that persons are detained at Ellis Island. Why. sir. when an immigrant is detained at that point or elsewhere waiting to be deported back to the country whence he came he is so detained at the expense of the steamship company which brought him here. he is not only supported during his stay at the island at the expense of that company. but when he is carried back to the home from which that company brought him his expenses are also defrayed by that company. You ask me. What of that?
