Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540082061

It is enough for me that I sit in this American assembly. representing with you the interests of the American people. and I am willing to leave to others those lofty flights into the affairs of the universe. excepting the United States. I think we should try to keep our feet firmly planted on American soil. Now. Mr. Speaker. one word as to this educational bill. which. whatever it may e christened. I had the honor to introduce here.. It was principally prepared and has beep especially advocated by the Immigration Restriction League of Boston. As some preposterous statements have been made in this Capitol concerning this league. perhaps I should say a word about its composition. Its gresident is John Fiske. of Harvard University. whose name is nown and honored among scholars the world over.
