Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540081412

Many of my closest friends and companions are of foreign birth. I believe our foreignborn citizens who have come to this country and adopted it as a home for themselves and their families are as loyal to the flag of their adoption as the man who was born beneath it. The foreign born have added to the material wealth and prosperity of the nation. and. what is of far greater value. they have contributed to its moral and intellectual welfare. In my judgment the genius of the American people. the prosperity and liberality of American institutions. and the superiority of the American nation has been achieved by the association of the best physical. moral. and intellectual men and women of all nations. But the sad experience of our people in want. idleness. and misfortune during the past three years under the freetrade provisions of the Wilson bill has demonstrated the wisdom of the Republican principles of protection.
