Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540073904

I ask the unanimous consent of the Senate for the present consideration of the bill making provision for the deportation of refugee Canadian Cree Indians from the State of Montana. and their delivery to the Canadian authorities. In connection with the request. I desire to make a statement concerning the facts. About ten years ago. at the close of the Riel rebellion. a number of Cree Indians from the Northwest Territory invaded the territory of the United States. and they have remained in the country since that time. Repeated efforts have been made through the State Department to secure the consent of the Canadian authorities to receive back those Indians.
