We are told that we who would not vote to take up this nondescript bill. which the Senator himself says is no Republican measure. are not protectionists. The protection system has its greatest enemy in the goldstandard party. I say you can not maintain in this country both the goldstandard and the protective system. and if you do maintain it you can not destroy the competition of which I have spoken. which is being built up in Asiatic countries to compete with American labor. If I desired to consume the time of the Senate I could produce the most alarming statements with reference to the growth of manufactures in China. Japan. and India. but I need not do so.
