But. sir. although the sway of nature was there longer undisturbed by immigration and settlement. that goodly land made. in fact. its entrance to the page of American history at a far earlier date. Indeed. its discovery and visitation by the white man had much precedency in time over many of our sister States of prior establishment in the Union. A peculiar charm attaches to the story of those early days.
