Like so many of the great men of America. Gen. John Stark was of that wonderful ScotchIrish stock which emigrated from the north of Ireland and settled in several of the colonies during the early part of the last century. His father. Archibald Stark. was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. andbr6ught with him to the New Hampshire wilderness the energy of his race and the culture of that renowned institution. He was one of the first settlers of Londonderry. N. H.. and was one of the leading men in\ that extraordinary body of emigrants who brought withthem the best development of civilization in common life then existing on earth. and whose descendants have maintainedthe same relative position ever since. have spread through the continent. always at the front and molding the development of society by the principles and abilitieg inherited from their ancestors. It is nottoo muchto say of the ScotchIrish settlement founded at Londonderry in the year of our Lord 1719 that nolike community has exerted agreater influenceupon the nation andthe world. The whole people seemed to be instinct with an elevated and creative energy. andleadership has been the natural function of their descendants wherever they have been found.
