Int~erfering in no way with the interests of those lines of railway which counect the Atantic S tates with the Pacific. hut tend.ing rather to stimulate and increase the activity o nt of which their tranc grows. it would cheapen all staple transp ortation and add vstly to the ease and economy of emigration from the East to the farms and nes of the Pacific Slo. I will now call the attention of the Senate to a letter addressed to me by the late Senator Joseph B. Brown. ot Georgia. i wisdom in all financial affairss fully appreciated by the people of the South. who will hear his opinions with profound respect.
