Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530132421

Minorities. and especially Jews. have been the subject of discrimination throughout Russian history. However. this discrimination has become worse since the Communists came to power. Today. Jewish emigration has been virtually halted. In 1984 only 303 Jews were allowed to emigrate from the U.S.S.R. and those that remain are subjected to ever inceasing repression. For example. receiving material from a foreign source is treated as "antiSoviet agitation" and can result in the persons being sentenced to 10 years or more in a labor camp. For those Jews still in the U.S.S.R.. communications with their friends and relatives has become more important as the repression has increased.
