Ukrainian. U.S.S.R. Yuri Tarnopolsky. his wife Olga. and daughter Irina have been waiting over 4 years to emigrate to the State of Israel. Tarnopolsky was fired from his Job as a research chemist after his family applied for an exit visa in 1979. Out of frustration and angry at being stripped of his professional standing in the academic community. he began a hunger strike on October 1. 1982. to protest the denial of his emigration visa. His hunger stike failed to persuade the Soviet officials to grant him and his family the freedom to emigrate. He was forced to end his 40day hunger stike on November 9. 1982. when his health deteriorated and he suffered a loss of sight in his right eye. On March 16. 1983. he was arrested and formally charged under article 1901 of the Criminal Law Code of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic [RSFSR].
