Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530132379

Alexander. his wife. Leah. and their daughter. Fania. have applied for emigration visas without success since 1974. Their other daughter. Rita. emigrated in 1973. and since then Alexander has been out of work. and Fania was expelled from university studies. On numerous instances. this fine family has been subjected to abuse and harassment simply because they have expressed a legitimate wish to emigrate from the Soviet Union. Todays Congressional Vigil for Soviet Jewry sends a strong. clear message to Soviet Jewish families that their plight is utmost in our minds. they have not been forgotten. and we will use every avenue to press for their legitimate right to emigrate. Likewise. todays Vigil sends a strong and clear message to Soviet officials that the steppedup campaign of harassment against the Jewish community in their country is abhorrent to the civilized world. and serves as an impediment to better relations between our nations. In closing. let me commend my colleagues for organizing the Vigil.
