Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530131532

The preferences play an important and useful role in reuniting families. Why oppose that? Immigrants who come here under the preference have stable families intact and awaiting them. ready to offer economic and social assistance to ease the transition to life in this Nation. Let me remind the Members that this is not a provision that affects some special or small groups. Everyone from Americans of Asian ancestry to those with roots in Europe and other parts of the Western Hemisphere have a direct and immediate concern for the preference. The fifth preference is a vital and necessary part of our immigration laws. There is no problem with it. There is no need to adjust or narrow it.
