Why. there is not a man in this country who can tell who his greatgreatgrandfather was. but there are a great many men who would be relieved from the necessity of doing so if he were able tosay "I do not know who my greatgreatgreatgrandfather was. but I do know that my father is a pensioned policeman and lives in the District of Columbia." Any man under the sun who is anxious to rise to distinction in this world has nothing to do but take a club in his hand. come to Washington. spend his life here as a policeman. and then retire on the aristocratic pension list. Any man who has a daughter who wants to distinguish herself will find that she has nothing to do but to marry a young fellow 25 years old with a blue suit and brass buttons and with the distinct understanding that he is to be a pensioned policeman after he becomes too feeble to knock a Coxeyito on the head who chances to tramp on the grass.
