Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530117006

I understand that the railroad companies estimate for this year about 125.000 French Canadian immigrants from Quebec into this country. which would be about 10 per cent in a single year. I understand the Government statisticians deny that. but concede about 80.000. which would be about 6 per cent. Six per cent of the entire population crossing the border. and coming down to the New England Slates and New York in a single year! Mr. President. a little while ago I inserted in the RECORD a statute of the Canadian Dominion. providing Jor the licensing of manufacturers of timber to cut timber on the Crown lands. and showing the amount they were to pay.
