Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530116795

I have no doubt in the South it is all home laborin New England the men employed in the woods. on the streams. in the sawmills. and in all the different stages that are incident to this industry are almost entirely our own people. The Canadians who come here do not enterinto this labor. except in a few instances. The great tide of immigration from Canada goes into other industries where the wages are lower and where no great skill is required. The man who is a practical lumberman. who is a chopper. or a driver of a team. or a river driver. or in the sawmill. or engaged in rafting the lumber. is almost always a superior kind of laborer. He is strong. hardy. skillful. and selfpossessed. and commands good wages.
