Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530091632

President. he gave the casting vote in 1846 for the Walker tariff. He said then that the infant had its growth. it must now stand upon its own feet. it must depend upon itself. The policy after that time was not infant manufactures. but it changed then to protection of American workmen against the pauper labor of Europe. The American workman will find that he can only be protected by finding employment. constant employment. and that can only be done when his products are sold at the lowest possible cost. so as to drive everybody out of his way. That can only be done by taking the tax off of materials. so that he can go out in the world.
