Illinois. the per capita expenditure for school purposes amounts to almost $2.50 per head of population. I might leave this part of the discussion here. It is patent that the educational test which the gentleman proposes would touch very few immigrants whose naturalization is desirable . I have paid attention to it solely for the purpose of showing the animus which permeates this bill. and I desire to add but one sentiment. If the gentleman from Alabama .is unable to curb his fervor in behalf of education in America. let me suggest to him that Alabama is a good State in which to commence his labors.
