The people of the Pacific coast felt. Mr. Speaker. and they had a right to feel. that the question of Chinese immigration and the importation of coolie labor. which they had been working and battling against for many years. was now about to be settled. Shortly after thq lawswere placed on the statutebook a case was taken to the Supreme Court of the United States to ascertain the constitutionality of the measure. The Court rendered an opinion that the law was constitutional. and after that decision had been promulgated the people of the section I have the honor to represent believed that there would be no further obstructions placed in th? way of the administration of this law.
