I do not remember a single effort of any great man that is so indelibly impressed upon my mind as that of Thomas Jefferson. made early in the history of this country. when he tried to prevail upon our forefathers in Virginia not only to stop the importation of negroes. but to emancipate them. And when he failed. when he acknowledged that the failure of the effort was because the people were not prepared for it. and when he went further and said that they would be less and less prepared for it as the numbers of the race increase and the antagonisms grow. "yet the day is not distant when they must bear and adopt it or worse will follow." Then he added. " For there is nothing more certainly written in the Book of Fate than these two thingSfirst. that these people are to be free. and. secondly. that no two races can live on the same soil equally free."
