Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530024090

I believe that all the opportunities presented in this country. in every direction. belong of right to its citizens and to no others. to those who built up and have sustained this nation. and have made these opportunities possible. and I believe that the man whose act and- vote tends to throw these opportunities to aliens. instead of our own people. is not acting for the best interests of the people of the United States. A nation must be selfish if it would be prosperous. It must recognize family ties. Mr. Speaker. the continued influx of such a race as the Chinese can not be otherwise than detrimental to the general good of our people and to the lowering of the standard of this nation. This bill is to open our gates to this influx of an undesirable immigration for six months longer. Mr. Speaker. the gates should be shut and locked. and kept shut.
