And to show. as to the necessities of my own State in particular. and to illustrate the urgent need for the increase of appropriations for this service. I may read from a letter to the honorable Commnissioner of the General Land Ofice. dated June 22. 1892. from the surveyorgeneral of Oregon. in which he says: Instead of the demand for surveys decreasing it is steadily increasing. There is a continuous immigration of homeseekers to this State. and they are rapidly settling tile valleys acud plateaus in the mountainous and timnber regions. There are many townships on which settlements have been made and applications for survey received. but for want of funds no present action can be taken. In view of these facts it will be seen that the foregoing estimate is very conservative.
