Session #52 · 1891–93

Speech #520052276

We have had this mission supported and maintained by Democratic Congresses. and maintained by a Democratic Administration. and now. without any reason except what seems to me to be false economy. it is proposed to withdraw the minister from Norway and Sweden. and say to these people that you are not of sufficient importance for us to continue our relations with you any longer. Have you heard any reason that justifies you in doing that? Does the saving of the paltry sum of $5.000. now paid to our minister there. justify you in assuming such an attitude towards those two countries? No. I have heard no reason satisfactory to my mind why we should begin to economize at that end of the line. The emigration from those three countries is among the most desirable in this country. They are among the most prosperous. frugal. and lawabiding citizens we have. I trust the amendment will prevail.
