I desire to say. if the Senator will pardon me. that the Senator from New Yorkand I suppose he refers to mehad the honor of voting. as I said the other day. for the first antiChinese bill which passed Congress. and in respectoto the evils that the Senator complains of. the Senator from New York is heartily and earnestly in sympathy with their correction and in favor of all the drastic measures that are necessary for their correction. Bear in mind. for their correction. The bill which has been reported here supplies an obvious defect in our present law. that it did not properly provide for the execution of the law now in force in respect to the deportation of the Chinese. For that purpose a provision has been put in the bill. as I had occasion to say the other day. that must be absolutely efficacious for that purpose. What I object to is that when legislation of that kind is proposed. and by men who are just as anxious as the Senator from Oregon is to correct the precise evils complained of (and I do not stand in a rear line from him on that question) a false position is assigned to them.
