The same relative conditions that prevailed several years ago prevail now. and all this talk about increasing the stringency of the provisions is nonsense unless Congress will provide the necessary money to increase the customs force along the frontier and to purchase steam launches for the interception of boats that are engaged in running Chinese into the United States by way of the Straits of Fuca and Puget Sound. I believe the Government has authorized the construction of one steam vessel for that purpose. but up to this time no such vessel is in service. although so urgently needed. Mr. Charles B. Woods. special deputy collector for the district of Puget Sound. says. on page 64 of the report of the special committee on Chinese immigration. in answer to the question: How many are there of them [inspectors]?
