I wish the Senator from Massachusetts had been here when the law of 1888 was passed. With his eloquent voice joined to that of his colleague. who was here and east his vote against it. perhaps that lawmight have been stayed. But I confront the Senator from Massachusetts with the fact that that law did pass almost unanimously. and that the case now before the Senate is whether we shall confine ourselves to simply renewing that violation of the treaty or whether we shall go a little further and cover the whole subject of Chinese immigration in accordance with the interests of the American people.
