The city of Vancouver may some day rival San Francisco if you cut off all the great Pacific coast commerce from the United States. Mr. President. it seems to me that while we are desiring to accomplish a good object and to limit so far as we can by reasonable and poroper laws the immigration of Chinese and cooly laborers. we ought not to do anything wvhich would disturb our diplomatic relations with China. Wre have thousands of American citizens in China. amongst them some of the very best of our land. men and wvomen full of religious fervor who go there to teach the principles of our religion. What would result to them. what wvould result to the property of our merchants in those cities?
