I gave notice that I would call up the bill reported from the Committee on Foreign Relations in respect of Chinese immigration. At that time the committee were of the opinion. or seemed to be. without any very carefulexamination of the law. that the present law for the exclusion of Chinese immigration would expire on the 6th of May of the present year. By a more careful investigation. and by examining the amendments which have been made to the act of May 6. 1882. I became entirely satisfied that the act of 1884 extended the time two years. so that the law prohibiting Chinese immigration does not expire until some time in July. 1894. Therefore there is no immediate pressure to urge the passage of the bill reported by the Committee on Foreign Relations. Certain Senators desire to speak upon the subject. however. and at some time when it is convenient tothem I shall call the bill up. but not today.
