Session #52 · 1891–93

Speech #520027655

I make it because I desire thrifty homes. smiling housewives. and happy children. Because I want the march of improvement to continue. because I want a well fed. warmly clad. well educated. and a moral people. With protection we can have all this. without it our people will be reduced to the condition of pauper labor in Europe. It is not my business to give warning. It is policy to let you run into all the dangers possible. but I stand here to proclaim that upon these questions of protection and honest money the Republican party stands firm and united. and in the coming election bound to be victorious. [Prolonged applause on the Republican side.] [Here the hammer fell.]
