I demand in the name of my constituents that the principle of protection to American industries shall be extended to the cordage manufacturers. Thousands of honest workmen of Massachusetts are engaged in this business. I demand their protection from thecompetition of the pauper labor of Europe engaged in the manufacture of bindertwine. and 1 do not believe that I appeal to this Republican Congress and to the committee of conference in vain. I append to my remarks letters from largo New England manufacturers of cordage and bindertwine. which are selfexplanatory. These gentlemen are gentlemen of high character and unquestionable integrity.
