If we were to establish free commercial relations with Canada. it must be one of two things. It must increase the desirability of that country as a place of residence and increase its population. or itimustnot. If wc do that. we do it largely atour own expense. lilt isagood thing to populate our own country. we have ample lands. in my judgment. for a great many years to come. toprovide for all proper immigrants that maycome to it. I do not anticipate. by a free commercial intercourse with Canada. any great demand for our manufactures. Naming two or three articles that American skill has adapted itself to the manufacture of. we should get their trade. particularly agricultural imploments.
